I know that for some of you it has not been easy to get here. I want to thank you for persevering and to thank all those who have helped in the process.
The AIDS pandemic is still growing in many parts of the world and in many vulnerable populations. Nevertheless, I am convinced that there is more knowledge and global political will than ever before to defeat AIDS.
At this conference, we have a unique historical opportunity to translate this knowledge and political will into financial commitment and scientifically-based action. We want this conference to be a forum to facilitate that discussion and to catalyse that process.
We have done this by what we call the “Barcelona Framework,” which adds three new tracks to the core programme of the conference: Track D, prevention science, and Track F, intervention and programme implementation. And within Track G, Advocacy and Policy, you will find presentations and debates on the strategies and policies that can help the implementation of these programmes.
Because we believe that effective action cannot happen without science, nor without activism, nor without policy, we have put together bridging sessions that will cover special relevant topics in an integrated approach, from basic sciences to policy. I encourage you to attend these sessions.
Finally, we wanted to make this conference an event that went far beyond this venue, through the Cultural Programme, the Local Community Committee and the collaboration of the people of Barcelona. I wish you all a useful and happy stay here.
